The Notorious Bettie Page
| http:/www.filmchannel1.com/hotshots/dvd/thenotoriousbettiepage.php THE NOTORIOUS BETTIE PAGE is not so much a good film as it is a good story about the woman who became known as the Pinup Queen of the Universe, became famous for her saucy bondage photographs as much as for her distinctive hairstyle, and then disappeared from the public eye, which, granted, was mostly male. The reason is that the director, Mary Harron, apparently chose to make it in the style of the Forties and Fifties, in which most of the action takes place, but which today's audiences have outgrown in more ways than one, rather than use modern, more sophisticated filmmaking techniques. Consequently, the film is shot in black-and-white except for those scenes that take place in Florida, which are in color. In addition, we get the feeling that the actors were directed to "underact" rather than to act naturally and believably. Gretchen Mol plays Bettie as an adult, and she appears to be as comfortable with her body and with posing nude as Bettie herself was, even though Bettie was raised in a very religious family and became even more religious at the end of her career. Bettie rationalizes this apparent contradiction by saying, "Adam and Eve were naked in the Garden of Eden, weren't they? When they sinned, they put on clothes." And after a friend is shocked upon seeing Bettie in bondage photographs, Bettie says, "It's just a prop. We're laughing all the time we're doing it." The bondage photography and ... |
